Emilie Nakachian

Born and raised in France and based in Toronto since 2015, my practice is rooted in conceptual and narrative surrealism, exploring memory, perception, and lived experience.

Working across painting, collage, and drawing, I create visual narratives that draw on the language of maps, diagrams, and architectural forms to explore how personal histories are shaped by dreams, habits, and emotion. Influenced by genre painting and the Dutch Golden Age, my work examines what lies beneath the surface of familiar scenes and spaces. Balancing figurative and abstract elements, my compositions invite contemplation and multiple interpretations while reflecting on what is revealed, obscured, or transformed through memory, and on how meaning is formed within emotional and social life.

These explorations unfold across four ongoing series: Proof of Attachment, Legends, Persistence of Life, and Recollections.
